The research began with a "Genius Dog Challenge" application process. Dog owners were asked to submit videos showcasing their pets' ability to retrieve specific toys based on verbal commands, with the human remaining outside the room. Successful applicants then proceeded to an online Vocabulary Assessment Test (VAT), where their dogs' abilities were further evaluated by researchers, alongside detailed interviews with the pet parents. Ultimately, 41 dogs demonstrated knowledge of at least five toy names.

The study's concluding phase involved comprehensive questionnaires for pet owners, gathering insights into their dogs' life histories, the owners' experiences in raising pets, and the methods by which their dogs acquired toy names. A staggering 56% of the participating dogs recognized 20 or more toy names, with some displaying an extraordinary capacity to identify up to 86 toys. Researchers concluded that owner training skills were not the primary determinant of these dogs' abilities, as evidenced by instances where new puppies, subjected to the same training methods, did not develop similar word-learning capabilities.
